Top 10 Eurovision Performances

Eurovision 2023 is right around the corner taking place in Liverpool this year with the Grand Finale on the 13th of May. With anticipation building as we wait to see who brings home the crown, here’s Lucky Voice’s ranking of the 10 best performances from past Eurovision Song Contests.

10) KATRINA AND THE WAVES: LOVE SHINE A LIGHT (1997)

Katrina and the Waves represented the UK in 1997 with their upbeat and joyous performance, featuring the band members dressed in white and surrounded by a chorus of singers. Love Shine a Light  went on to win the competition and became a popular anthem of unity and hope, making it one of the most memorable Eurovision performances in history.

9) LORDI: HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH (FINLAND, 2006)

In their avant-garde costumes, the heavy metal band from Finland gave a memorable Eurovision performance in 2006. Lordi showed a unique performance different from conventional pop acts, diversifying Eurovision and becoming the first hard rock contestant to win.

8) DANA INTERNATIONAL: DIVA (ISRAEL, 1998)

Israeli artist Dana International made history in 1998 as the first transgender winner of Eurovision, a huge moment for the LGBTQ+ community. Her powerful vocals, dramatic stage presence, and catchy beat of "Diva" made it a standout performance that has become iconic in Eurovision history.

7) LENA: SATELLITE (GERMANY, 2010)

From Germany, Lena gave a clean-cut simple performance of Satellite, taking first place in 2010. Her performance was praised for its simplicity and authenticity. Lena's relaxed and natural stage presence helped her stand out from the more heavily choreographed performances of other countries.

6) DUNCAN LAURENCE: ARCADE (NETHERLANDS, 2019)

Duncan Laurence was the first Eurovision win since 1975 by a Dutch singer, songwriter and producer. His performance was highly emotional and intimate, with the performer sitting alone at a piano for most of the song. Arcade went on to become the most-streamed Eurovision song of all time.

5) CLIFF RICHARD: CONGRATULATIONS (UK, 1978)

Cliff Richard represented the UK with his song "Congratulations" in 1978. His performance was energetic and lively backed by a large orchestra and a group of female dancers. Despite being a fan favourite, the song finished in second place but became a hit after his memorable performance.

4) MÅNESKIN: ZITTI E BUONI (ITALY, 2021)

The Italian glam rock band MÅNESKIN was created in 2016 and won the Eurovision contest in 2021. It created immense opportunities and popularity for them singing Zittle E Buoni with a flamboyant and electric performance.This performance marked the first time Italy won Eurovision in over 30 years.

3) OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN: LONG LIVE LOVE (UK, 1974)

Before Olivia Newton John hit the big screen of Grease, she sang on behalf of the UK in 1974. She sang Long Live Love coming in 4th place and performing the same year as ABBA. Her performance featured colourful and playful staging, complete with dancers dressed as flowers and butterflies launching Olivia Newton-John's successful music career.

2) CÉLINE DION: NE PARTEZ PAS SANS MOI (SWITZERLAND, 1988)

The Canadian singer performed on the Eurovision stage on behalf of Switzerland in 1988. She won the contest by one point and led her to becoming an immensely successful artist. Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi set her up well into the 90s with her simple yet elegant performance, showcasing her powerful vocals.

1) ABBA: WATERLOO (SWEDEN, 1974)

No Eurovision list is complete without ABBA. Representing Sweden in 1974, ABBA gave the most memorable performance in Eurovision history thus far, performing Waterloo. This set up the band for huge international success, solidifying their status as one of the most successful pop groups of all time.
