How To Choose The Right Karaoke Song
When it comes to choosing a karaoke song, there are thousands of tracks available (well, over 82 million, to be more precise, but you get the point). And we all know that when there are too many options available, it becomes incredibly difficult to make a choice.
However, when it comes to karaoke tunes, you can definitely take steps to choose the right song that suits your voice and skills. After all, we all want to sound decent when we're up on that karaoke stage. So, without further adieu, here are four points for you to consider when picking a karaoke song to sing.
1) Write down your favourite sing-along songs
Whether you love songs from musicals or Hip Hop beats, you should always try to choose a song that you enjoy. This is the easiest way to ensure you have a great time while you’re up on that stage.
So take the time to write down 20 or so songs that you enjoy. Then, it’ll be a lot easier to fine-tune the list and choose a few top song choices for yourself.
2) Consider the crowd and vibe
While we do recommend singing a song that you love, regardless of the genre, it might not be the best idea to sing a Disney song in front of a crowd of 50-year-olds. This is why it’s important to be aware of the crowd you’ll be performing in front of.
Another thing to consider is the popularity of the song you’ve chosen. Karaoke crowds often love to sing along with the performer, but you also don’t want your voice to be completely drowned out. Likewise, you also don’t want to choose a super popular song that has been overdone, such as ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey or ‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA.
3) Do you have the range?
Yes, we know karaoke is about having fun, even if you’re not the next Beyonce’ or Justin Bieber. However, no one likes to listen to a person singing a song that doesn’t match up with their vocal abilities.
So, with your list of favourite songs, you now need to take a look at each one and determine whether you have the vocal range to sing the song. To check your vocal range, you can use a piano and go through the notes and see if you can sing the same note comfortably. Or, there are various apps available that will allow you to check this too. Based on this, you’ll be able to determine if you’re more of a soprano (high notes, female) or a bass (low notes, male).
4) Make sure you can match the tempo
The last thing you need to think about when choosing a karaoke song is the tempo. There’s no point in choosing a fast-paced rap song if it’s only going to leave you tongue-tied. Likewise, you shouldn’t sing a song that’s too low if your vocal abilities aren’t the strongest - this is because slower songs tend to have notes that are longer, making them difficult to hold.
Ready to choose your karaoke song?
Whether you’re a singing superstar or simply love karaoke, there are endless, easy songs to choose from for your next performance. And if you follow these four tips, you’ll end up with a song choice that’s perfect for you. So what are you waiting for? Find your song, grab that mic and get practising!
